First is the base layer of either wool or polyester.

These two magic fabrics will not absorb potential sweat from your body, which is what will keep you warm in the Arctic.
The perspiration from your skin stays on your skin and keeps warm, rather than being absorbed into the fabric where it’ll cool the fabric and your body down.
Invest in a good quality base layer is essential if you plan to spend time with us in the Arctic!

The second layer is up to you.

Whether you want to wear a dress or trousers and a shirt, the second layer consists of whatever you feel comfortable wearing.
The third layer is your outerwear. A durable Arctic winter jacket and snow pants are necessary. Some people may think that snow pants are optional, but a good, warm jacket will be your best friend in the Arctic. It has to be well insulated and windproof to provide protection from the elements. Additionally, a hood or a hat to cover your head and neck should be part of your winter gear.

Shoes

Most locals wear waterproof and warm boots. There’s a variety of styles from stylish leather boots to practical hiking boots that all are appropriate to use in the Nuuk winters, but the key is that they are comfortable and keep your feet dry and safe from snow & ice. An extra warmth option for your feet is woolen socks. If you are going hiking in the winter, snowshoes are essential. You can either bring your own or rent a pair through the local tour operators.

Accessories STOP

It is absolutely necessary to protect your hands, head, and neck when you are in the Arctic. Gloves are an essential necessity. They must be warm, lined, and windproof! A hat is also a must-pack, whether it’s a woolen hat, a beanie, or a fur hat, your ears will thank you. And finally, some kind of scarf will also serve you well during your trip to Nuuk. Always remember to stay warm.
