Visit Nuuk
Qooqqut is a tranquil valley retreat nestled deep in Nuuk Fjord, offering lush landscapes and a unique summer dining experience. Accessible only by boat, it beckons those seeking serenity and adventure amid stunning natural surroundings.
Introduction
Nestled at the head of a side branch of Nuup Kangerlua, Qooqqut is accessible by a scenic 50-70 minute fast boat ride from Nuuk. Once a sheep farm, it has now transformed into a charming destination featuring cosy cabins and the seasonal restaurant Qooqqut Nuan. This idyllic setting serves as a perfect hub for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, and peaceful retreats, especially between June and September when services are fully operational.
Visitors are drawn to the valley’s amphitheatre-like shape, lush floor, and steep mountains, all of which contribute to a serene nature experience. Guests can indulge in fishing in the fjord and savour gourmet “catch-and-eat” meals at Qooqqut Nuan, highlighting local Greenlandic ingredients. As the sun sets over the peaks, the landscape is bathed in a warm glow, and in autumn and spring, the enchanting northern lights may dance across the sky, creating a perfect backdrop for those seeking tranquillity away from the bustle of nightlife.
History & Geology
Qooqqut began as a remote sheep farm, showcasing mid-20th-century agricultural experiments in the Nuuk area, with the landscape still reflecting historic fields and scattered farm buildings. Nearby are archaeological remnants from both Norse and Inuit periods, including stone foundations and turf outlines, which suggest centuries of human activity, although these sites are not formal visitor attractions. Today, Qooqqut is primarily recognised for Qooqqut Nuan, the restaurant and cabin area that relocates from Nuuk to its summer location above the valley.
Getting There
All journeys to Qooqqut begin on the water. The valley lies at the head of a side branch of Nuup Kangerlua and is usually reached by fast boat from Nuuk in roughly 50–70 minutes, depending on the vessel and weather conditions. Local operators run organised day trips in summer that combine a scenic fjord cruise, a stop to fish for cod or redfish, and a multi-course “catch-and-eat” lunch or dinner at Qooqqut Nuan, usually lasting around six to seven hours in total.
For those planning an overnight cabin stay or starting or finishing a hike, it is also possible to arrange direct boat transfers without the fishing element, turning Qooqqut into a quiet base rather than a single-day excursion.
No public ferries serve Qooqqut, so all visits must be pre-arranged as a tour, charter, or private transfer from Nuuk.
→ Local Tip
When you book, make sure your boat departure and return are confirmed before you commit to flights or onward travel; weather in Nuuk Fjord can change quickly, so it is wise to keep at least one flexible “buffer” day in your itinerary.
What to see & do
Fish, Dine, and Watch the Fjord
The “catch-and-eat” experience is Qooqqut’s hallmark: guests fish for cod and redfish in the fjord before chefs at the restaurant transform the catch into tailored, multi-course dishes.
The menu centres on Greenlandic-Asian fusion, using local meats, fish, berries, and herbs alongside European and Asian flavours.
→ Local Tip
Let your operator or the restaurant know about any dietary needs when you book – menus are often fixed, especially on busy summer evenings.
Cabin Life
Around five heated, insulated cabins overlook the valley and fjord, offering simple comfort and space to disconnect.
Guests typically book meal plans via the restaurant; there are no shops, so pack as if you were going on a self-sufficient cabin or camping trip.
Hikes and Viewpoints
Valley walks, short ridge hikes, and late-summer berry picking give access to panoramic views and open terrain, often following informal “thinking paths” – local, self-guided routes rather than marked trails.
Waterproof boots are recommended; the valley can be wet and marshy, especially after rain.
→ Local Tip
Even for short walks, carry a small daypack with water, an extra layer, and a windproof shell – the weather can change faster than the distance you planned.
Qooqqut–Kapisillit Trail (full hike here)
Qooqqut is a key waypoint on the well-known hiking route to Kapisillit: roughly 44–45 km with about 1,300 m of elevation gain, usually completed in 2–3 days by experienced trekkers.
The hike is remote and demanding, and requires careful planning of boat transfers, extra weather days, and proper equipment.
Wildlife & Seasonal Tours
Multi-day trips based in Qooqqut often include boat transfers, guided hikes, fishing and foraging, and – in spring and autumn – the possibility of northern lights viewing.
When & how to plan your visit
When to Go
Summer (June–September)
Restaurant and cabins are open; ideal for catch-and-eat tours, hiking, and enjoying long daylight hours.
Spring/Autumn (March–May, September–October)
Selected tours and wildlife packages operate in cooler weather, with a chance of northern lights.
Winter
There is no regular winter restaurant service, and ice or stormy conditions may limit access. Visits are only realistic with specialist operators and appropriate safety gear.
For most visitors, July and August offer the best combination of comfort, stable boat operations, and open services.
Staying & Eating
Qooqqut Nuan operates as a seasonal pop-up restaurant, moving from Nuuk to the valley each summer and specialising in local Greenlandic ingredients interpreted with Asian and European culinary influences.
The cabins are basic but cosy, each accommodating up to five guests, with meals usually reserved in advance since there are no shops or fuel stations on site.
Practicalities
Services & Supplies
Qooqqut offers comfort, but very few services. Beyond the cabins and the restaurant, there are no shops, petrol stations or public facilities, so visitors need to bring all essentials from Nuuk, including snacks, special diet items and personal medication.
Weather & Clothing
The weather in Nuuk Fjord is famously changeable and often cooler on the water than in town, so you should pack as if you were going on a backcountry trip: waterproof and windproof outer layers, warm mid-layers, a hat and gloves, and sturdy, preferably waterproof boots for walking in the valley’s often damp and marshy terrain.
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is limited and can drop out completely at times, making Qooqqut a genuine digital detox rather than a place to rely on constant connectivity.
Safety & Health
There is no medical clinic on site, so in emergencies, assistance must come by boat or helicopter from Nuuk, which is another reason why less experienced visitors are strongly advised to travel on organised tours or with local guides who understand the conditions.
Respecting the Landscape
The surrounding hillsides, old sheep fields and archaeological traces of past Norse and Inuit presence are part of a living cultural landscape, so they should be admired respectfully – stones left where they are, artefacts untouched, and all rubbish carried back to Nuuk.
→ Local Tip
Think of Qooqqut as a remote cabin trip with restaurant comfort added on top; if you prepare as though there were no services at all, you will be pleasantly surprised rather than caught out.
Sample Day-Trip Plan
Charter Example
09:00 – Depart Nuuk harbour by boat
09:45–11:15 – Fishing stop in Nuuk Fjord
12:00–15:00 – Arrival in Qooqqut, multi-course lunch at Qooqqut Nuan, short valley walk

→ Local Tip
If you are flying in or out of Nuuk, avoid booking your catch-and-eat trip on the same day as your flight – give the fjord, and the weather, a little room to breathe.
Fitting Qooqqut Into Your Itinerary
Qooqqut works well as a signature fjord experience during a Nuuk city break, the first or last stop on a multi-day hike to Kapisillit, or a two-night cabin escape that pairs easily with other Nuuk Fjord activities such as Kapisillit visits, icefjord cruises, or whale watching.
