The hike to Kanninnquit is a pretty and varied trail with a lot of elevation gain. The trail brings you through Paradise Valley, along a waterfall and through a gorge before you climb up Kaunninnguit. When you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with a wonderful view of mount Sermitsiaq, Ukkusissat and Nuup Kangerlua.
Overview of the route.
The trail to Kuanninnguit follows the first 2.7 km of the Sermitsiaq View trail. Follow the yellow marks on this part of the trail.
The trail begins by the road on the north-eastern side of Anstalten for Domfældte. The route alternates between a well-trodden path and a newly marked trail. You should thus be aware that the markers won’t always follow the trodden path. You will pass the town’s explosives depot on the left, and after about 500 m, you will reach a large cairn with a view out towards Sermitsiaq, Nuup Kangerlua, and Paradise Valley. Just north of the cairn is a good place to make your first stop to enjoy the view.
Follow the marks from the cairn towards the streams to the east. You will now cross two streams, which you in most months of the year can cross without getting wet feet. You may have to wade through the streams, particularly during the spring thaw or after heavy rainfall.
Once you have crossed the second stream, follow the marks and the trail on the northern side of the stream. After a while, you will pass a pretty waterfall. After this point, you will reach a passage where a bit of bouldering is necessary. This is one of the too difficult parts of the trail.
After about 2.7 km, the trail to Kuanninnguit will branch off to the north (left), away from the yellow route to Shelter 1. The trail will now be marked red.
The trail will from this point briefly lead northeast where after it will veer eastwards. About 500 m after you leave the yellow trail, you’ll reach a section that is quite steep and difficult as you traverse rocks that might be slippery. After this, you will ascend steadily, flattening out for the last couple of hundred meters before you reach the cairn at the top, which stands alone.
The return route is back the way you came.

Best times to hike and seasonal conditions.
This trail is an all year trail, but be aware that the ground may be slippery due to snow and ice, particularly in the winter months. Snow shoes or spikes are recommended during the winter months.
Likewise, you should also be aware that snow and ice may hide most of the markers.
During the snowy season, a good alternative for the first part of the trail is to follow the snow scooter track on the southern side of the stream. If you do so, you should be aware of the snow scooters and be considerate of their passage.
How to get to the starting point.
As there is currently no public transport to the trailhead, your options are the following:
- A bus to the airport and walking from there. Ad approx. 2 km along the road.
- A bus to Ilimmarfik (University of Greenland) and walking from there. Ad 3.5 km along the road
- On foot or by car/bike. From city center ad 7 km along the road
- A taxi to the start of the route
Connecting trails or extending your hike.
This hike can be combined with the View from Shelter 1 route, which starts and ends at the same place as the hike to Kuanninnguit. You can continue to Kapisillit from Shelter 1.
This hike can also be combined with the Quassussuaq Circular route, which finishes in Qinngorput, from where you can catch a bus.
Availability of drinking water along the trail.
Fill your water bottle at one of the two streams in Paradise Valley or in the lake. It can be hard to find good places on the rest of the route, particularly during the winter and during drier summers.
